Cotton & Poly-Cotton Napkins

Cotton is the right fibre for the job and the wrong fibre for your labour bill. It wets out immediately, it lets go of oil in a hot wash, and it feels like something rather than nothing in the hand. It also creases, shrinks on its first industrial wash, and comes out of a dryer needing pressing.

Poly-cotton is the compromise everybody actually buys, and the percentages are not a detail. A fifty-fifty blend behaves quite differently from an eighty-twenty, and a supplier who will only tell you “poly-cotton” is telling you nothing. We put the split on the quote.

We also put the finished size after laundering on the quote, not just the cut size, because cotton-rich napkins shrink and the folds you are planning depend on the size you end up with rather than the size you ordered.

It depends on whether you press. If you have a flatwork ironer or a press, go cotton-rich and get the absorbency. If you are drying and folding by hand behind the bar, a poly-rich blend will look far better on the table. The wrong answer is not asking for the percentage.

How much do cotton napkins shrink?

Enough to matter for folding, which is why we quote the finished size after laundering as well as the cut size. Most of it happens on the first industrial wash. If your folds are tight, order to the finished size you need and let us work backwards.
