Damask & Satin-Band Napkins

A folded napkin standing on a plate is doing structural work, and whether it stands or slumps is decided by the weave long before anybody learns the fold. Damask — a figured weave with long floats that catch the light — carries a crease far better than a plain weave of the same fibre and weight.

A satin band is the simpler version: a plain-weave body with a woven satin border a few centimetres in from the edge. It gives you the light-catching edge and the crease behaviour where it matters, at a fraction of the cost of a full damask.

Both are woven effects, not printed ones, so they survive the laundry exactly as long as the napkin does. If you have ever bought “damask-look” napkins and watched the pattern go flat after a season, that was a print.

Why will our napkins not hold a fold?

Almost always the weave and the fibre, not the folding. A soft plain-weave cotton in a light weight will slump whatever your team does to it. A damask or satin-band weave in the same fibre will stand. Weight helps too, but the weave does more.

Is damask worth it over a satin band?

For a full banqueting room, often not. A satin band gives you the woven border, the light and most of the crease behaviour for considerably less. Full damask is worth it where the napkin is at eye level and the pattern is part of the room.
