Spun Polyester Napkins

Spun polyester is the most-used napkin fibre in hospitality and the reason is labour, not performance. It comes out of a tumble dryer flat, it does not need pressing, it holds colour through bleach cycles it should not survive, and it lasts.

What it is not good at is being a napkin. Polyester is hydrophobic — it repels water — and oleophilic, meaning oil is attracted to it and stays. So a spun polyester napkin is slow to take liquid off a hand and it keeps grease marks that a cotton napkin would give up in the wash. Spun yarn helps a great deal compared to filament polyester, and it does not close the gap.

We say this plainly because most of our customers should still buy it. If you are running a high-turnover room with an on-site laundry and no press, the labour saving is real money and the trade is worth making with your eyes open.

Why do our polyester napkins keep grease marks?

Is spun polyester the same as ordinary polyester?

No, and the difference is worth paying for. Filament polyester is slick and feels like a bin liner in the hand. Spun polyester is made from short staple fibres twisted into yarn, so it has texture and absorbs far better. It still absorbs less than cotton.
